Operation “Tip This House”: L.A. County Public Health Agencies to Hold Outbreak Preparedness Exercise

Presence of Aedes mosquitoes increase risk of Zika virus and other diseases

WHATVector Control staff will conduct an emergency response training exercise in partnership with trained Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and Public Health Emergency Volunteers (PHEV) to encourage residents to tip and toss stagnant water to deter invasive Aedes mosquitoes. Teams will conduct door-to-door yard inspections and mosquito control treatments (as needed) in a Downey neighborhood – one of many communities in Los Angeles County with Aedes mosquitoes.

WHO• Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (www.glacvcd.org)

• Medical Reserve Corps and Public Health Emergency Volunteer Network under the supervision of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Emergency Preparedness and Response Division (http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/eprp/).

WHEN and WHERE• Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 9:00am – 12:00pm

• Barbara J. Riley Community Center | 7810 Quill Drive, Downey, CA 90242

Teams will be canvasing the surrounding neighborhood.

WHY

• This exercise is designed to increase public awareness of the Aedes mosquito threat and to prepare and improve the response strategy of public health agencies during an outbreak event. Invasive Aedes mosquitoes in L.A. County have the potential to transmit Zika, dengue fever, yellow fever and chikungunya to people. Since 2015, there has been more than 157 travel-related cases of Zika in L.A. County.
